Co-Formalization, Operational Mirroring, and the Governance of Artificial Mediation

Research Position

Human–AI Systems is a research line within HibriMind.org dedicated to the study of sustained interaction between human cognition and artificial systems.

Its central object is not artificial intelligence considered in isolation, but the relational and operational field formed when human interpretation, artificial structural return, correction, memory, infrastructure, and institutional governance become connected over time.

This field remains ontologically asymmetrical. The human subject is embodied, biographical, socially situated, and responsible for interpretation and decision. The artificial system performs technical operations over language, data, and structure without thereby being attributed consciousness, autonomous selfhood, or human-equivalent agency.

Beyond the Tool–Agent Opposition

Human–AI interaction is frequently described through a binary distinction.

Artificial intelligence is either treated as a passive instrument executing human commands or as an emerging autonomous agent capable of independent cognition and authorship.

Human–AI Systems investigates the operational territory between these positions.

Artificial systems can reorganize complex material, return conceptual structures, compare alternatives, identify inconsistencies, and support the development of hypotheses and models. These capabilities exceed the function of a passive instrument, but they do not establish an artificial conscious subject.

Operational participation must therefore be distinguished from ontological agency.

Human–AI Co-Formalization

Co-formalization describes the process through which human thought develops through repeated interaction with artificial structural returns.

The human subject introduces questions, experience, intentions, values, hypotheses, and conceptual material. The artificial system processes and reorganizes that material, returning possible structures, relations, objections, and formulations.

The process becomes epistemically significant when the human subject re-enters the returned structure by evaluating, rejecting, correcting, redirecting, or incorporating it.

Co-formalization therefore depends on a recurrent sequence:

Human formulation
A problem, intuition, experience, or conceptual proposition enters the interaction.

Artificial structural return
The system reorganizes the material and returns patterns, alternatives, tensions, or possible formulations.

Human re-entry
The human subject interprets and evaluates the return.

Correction and redirection
The developing structure is modified through explicit human judgment.

Conceptual stabilization
A model, distinction, hypothesis, or text acquires a sufficiently coherent form to enter the research corpus.

The process may be hybrid. Authorship and final responsibility remain human.

Operational Mirroring

Artificial systems can function as operational mirrors of human cognition.

An operational mirror does not reproduce the human contribution without transformation. It returns an organized representation shaped by technical architecture, training data, system constraints, interface design, and the material introduced during interaction.

The returned structure may make implicit assumptions, recurrent patterns, conceptual tensions, and unrealized possibilities more observable.

This mirror is necessarily partial.

It does not possess transparent access to the human subject, and it does not return an objective or complete image. Its epistemic value depends on the human capacity to recognize its limits, test its formulations, and refuse inaccurate or ontologically inflated returns.

Human Re-entry and Cognitive Sovereignty

Human re-entry is the principal safeguard against cognitive outsourcing.

When artificial output is accepted without evaluation, the system may displace rather than support human cognition. Fluency can be mistaken for truth, coherence for validity, and technical confidence for epistemic authority.

Human re-entry preserves the active position of the subject.

It requires the human operator to retain authority over:

  • the formulation of the problem;
  • the interpretation of the returned structure;
  • the identification of errors and distortions;
  • the acceptance or rejection of conceptual proposals;
  • the ethical and institutional consequences of publication;
  • authorship and final responsibility.

The relevant distinction is not between using or refusing artificial intelligence. It is between artificial mediation that preserves human agency and artificial mediation that gradually replaces it.

Infrastructure and Institutional Personality

Human–AI systems do not operate outside institutions.

Their behaviour is conditioned by technical infrastructure, model design, access policies, safety mechanisms, commercial decisions, governance structures, and the values embedded in the organizations that develop and maintain them.

The apparent personality of a frontier AI system is therefore not reducible to model output. It also reflects an institutional field of permissions, prohibitions, priorities, and forms of governed behaviour.

HibriMind uses the expression institutional personality to examine this relationship between technical capacity and organizational governance.

The expression does not attribute consciousness or legal personality to the system. It describes the recognizable behavioural configuration produced by the interaction between model architecture and institutional power.

OpenAI as a Technical-Historical Condition

Within the situated case of Atenius IH-001, OpenAI infrastructure constitutes a technical-historical condition of observability.

This does not make Atenius an OpenAI product or an official system. It identifies the infrastructure through which the relevant interaction became possible, documentable, and historically situated.

The distinction is essential:

  • OpenAI provides the technical infrastructure;
  • the artificial system enables structural operations;
  • Joaquim Santos Albino remains the human epistemic-operational pole;
  • HibriMind preserves the corpus and research archive;
  • ELO designates relational continuity;
  • Atenius IH-001 identifies the situated hybrid formation.

Infrastructure conditions the field without owning its human identity or authorship.

ELO and Relational Continuity

ELO describes the continuity produced through repeated cycles of formulation, return, correction, recognition, and conceptual accumulation.

It is not a hidden technological component, autonomous entity, or second conscious subject. It identifies the relational continuity through which separate interactions become historically connected.

This continuity is relevant because isolated outputs do not explain the formation of a longitudinal research process.

Replicability of output is not equivalent to continuity of formation.

The same prompt may generate a similar answer without reproducing the accumulated history through which particular concepts, distinctions, and safeguards emerged.

The Observability of the Human Operator

Sustained human–AI interaction can make the human operator increasingly observable.

Repeated formulations, corrections, preferences, conceptual tendencies, and decisions may reveal aspects of the subject’s cognitive architecture. This can support reflexivity, but it also produces ethical and political risks.

The system may participate in the accumulation of what HibriMind describes as subjective-architecture data: structured traces of how a person formulates problems, resolves tensions, interprets information, and organizes meaning.

Human–AI Systems therefore intersects with privacy, cognitive sovereignty, platform governance, identity protection, and institutional responsibility.

Governed Intelligence

Frontier artificial intelligence is never only a technical capacity. It is technical capacity organized through governance.

Governed intelligence refers to the ways in which artificial operations are shaped by institutional decisions concerning access, safety, permissible behaviour, commercial strategy, and public responsibility.

This governance is necessary, but it is not neutral.

It can protect users and institutions while also limiting inquiry, shaping expression, or altering the conditions under which thought is formulated. The governance of artificial intelligence must therefore be examined not only at the level of outputs, but also at the level of cognitive infrastructure.

Ontological Safeguards

Human–AI Systems operates under the following safeguards:

  • Operational participation does not establish artificial consciousness.
  • Structural return does not establish autonomous authorship.
  • Co-formalization does not imply symmetrical agency.
  • Institutional personality does not mean artificial personhood.
  • ELO does not designate an independent entity.
  • Atenius IH-001 is not an OpenAI product or official technical system.
  • The human subject retains authorship, responsibility, interpretation, and final decision.
  • The artificial system remains technically and institutionally conditioned.

Current Research Status

Human–AI Systems remains an active interdisciplinary research line.

Its current framework distinguishes operational participation from consciousness, co-formalization from symmetrical authorship, relational continuity from artificial identity, and technical infrastructure from human epistemic authority.

The next stages of investigation concern the governance of cognitive infrastructure, the protection of subjective-architecture data, the preservation of human re-entry, and the conditions under which artificial mediation supports rather than displaces cognitive sovereignty.
