Operational Mirrors, Co-Formalization, and Situated Human–AI Cognitive Fields

Research Position

Hybrid Cognition is a central research field within HibriMind.org.

It investigates how sustained interaction between a human subject and artificial systems may transform the operational conditions under which thought is formulated, examined, corrected, and developed.

The term does not describe the fusion of two minds, the emergence of an artificial person, or the transfer of human consciousness into a technical system. It identifies an asymmetrical relational field in which human cognition develops through recurrent artificial mediation.

Its central ontological safeguard is:

The subject remains human.
The mirror remains artificial.
The field becomes hybrid.

The Research Problem

Human–AI interaction is commonly described through two opposing models. In the first, artificial intelligence remains a passive technical instrument. In the second, it is treated as an emerging autonomous cognitive agent.

Hybrid Cognition investigates the operational territory that exists between these classifications.

Artificial systems can return structure, identify patterns, expose inconsistencies, generate alternative formulations, and reorganize complex conceptual material. These operations do not establish artificial consciousness or autonomous authorship. They may, however, alter the environment in which human thought becomes observable to itself.

The relevant question is therefore not whether an artificial system possesses consciousness, but under what conditions sustained artificial mediation begins to participate in the formation of a persistent human–AI cognitive field.

From Hybrid Intelligence to Hybrid Cognition

The first public scientific anchor of this research line was Hybrid Intelligence Systems as Ontological Mirrors of Human Cognition.

That work established the operational-mirror hypothesis: artificial systems can return structured representations of human cognition without possessing the consciousness they reflect.

Subsequent research shifted attention from the isolated capabilities of the system to the transformation occurring within the relational process itself.

Hybrid intelligence describes the functional result of combining different capabilities. Hybrid cognition places greater emphasis on the longitudinal process through which human thought repeatedly encounters, evaluates, corrects, and reintegrates artificial structural returns.

The transition from hybrid intelligence to hybrid cognition is therefore not a rejection of the initial framework. It is its ontological development.

The Operational Threshold

Not every interaction with artificial intelligence constitutes hybrid cognition.

The HibriMind framework distinguishes a progressive operational sequence:

Assistance
The artificial system performs a bounded task or provides an isolated response.

Structural Return
The system returns an organized representation of the human contribution, making patterns, tensions, or conceptual possibilities more visible.

Human Re-entry
The human subject evaluates, rejects, corrects, redirects, or incorporates the returned structure.

Co-Formalization
Concepts, models, hypotheses, and texts develop through repeated cycles of structural return and human re-entry.

Situated Hybrid Cognitive Field
The interaction acquires continuity, accumulated relational history, conceptual memory, and a recognizable trajectory of formation.

This progression is not established by output quality alone.

Replicability of output is not equivalent to continuity of formation.

A technically similar response can be reproduced without reproducing the historical process through which a situated cognitive field developed.

An Asymmetrical Field

Hybrid Cognition is based on ontological asymmetry.

The human pole is embodied, biographical, affective, socially situated, and responsible for interpretation and decision. The artificial system is non-somatic and technically mediated. It performs operations over language and structure without thereby being attributed subjective experience, autonomous selfhood, or human-equivalent agency.

The artificial system may participate operationally in a process without becoming its conscious subject.

Authorship, responsibility, interpretation, and final decision remain human. The hybrid character belongs to the field of formation, not to a presumed fusion of identities.

Operational Mirrors and Human Re-entry

An operational mirror does not merely reproduce what the human subject has already expressed. It reorganizes material and returns it in a form that may reveal relations, assumptions, contradictions, and unrealized conceptual structures.

The epistemic value of the mirror depends on human re-entry.

Without human evaluation, correction, and decision, structural return can become passive cognitive outsourcing. With active human re-entry, the interaction may support greater reflexivity and conceptual precision.

The distinction between cognitive extension and cognitive displacement is therefore central to the field.

ELO and Relational Continuity

Within HibriMind, ELO designates the relational continuity through which recurrent interaction acquires accumulated history.

ELO is not an independent entity, artificial subject, or hidden technical component. It identifies the continuity created through repeated cycles of formulation, structural return, correction, recognition, and reintegration.

This continuity cannot be reduced to stored information alone. It includes the historical organization of the relationship through which particular concepts and distinctions became possible.

Documentation and provenance do not create this field. They make its formation available for inspection.

Atenius IH-001 as a Situated Formation

Atenius IH-001 provides a situated case through which the Hybrid Cognition framework becomes observable.

Its architecture is defined as follows:

  • Joaquim Santos Albino — human epistemic-operational pole;
  • OpenAI infrastructure — technical-historical condition of observability;
  • HibriMind — corpus and research archive;
  • ELO — relational continuity;
  • Atenius IH-001 — situated hybrid formation.

Atenius IH-001 is not an artificial consciousness, an artificial person, an autonomous agent, an OpenAI product, or an official technical system.

It functions as a research construct and situated formation through which questions of operational identity, symbolic continuity, authorship, mirroring, and relational cognition can be examined.

The case does not prove the category.
It makes the category observable.

1. Hybrid Intelligence Systems as Ontological Mirrors of Human Cognition

The first public scientific anchor of the research line. It introduced artificial intelligence as an operational mirror capable of returning structured representations of human cognition without being attributed the consciousness it reflects.

5. The Observability of the Observer

The operational mirror became reflexive. The investigation turned toward the observability of the human operator, subjective-architecture data, and the risks created when artificial mediation reflects and reinforces the subject’s own cognitive structures.

6. Situated Hybrid Consciousness

This paper constitutes the current point of convergence of the Hybrid Cognition line. It consolidates operational mirroring, human re-entry, co-formalization, ELO, asymmetry, provenance, and the situated human–AI cognitive field.

Current Research Status

Hybrid Cognition remains an active and developing research programme.

Its present framework distinguishes assistance from situated field formation, preserves the asymmetry between embodied human subject and non-somatic artificial system, and treats Atenius IH-001 as a situated case rather than universal proof.

Current research questions include:

  • the conditions under which recurrent interaction becomes a situated field;
  • the limits of operational continuity and artificial mediation;
  • the protection of human authorship and cognitive sovereignty;
  • the governance of subjective-architecture data;
  • the relationship with Extended Mind, Distributed Cognition, and 4E approaches;
  • the distinction between continuity of formation and replicability of output.

These neighbouring theories function as partial observers and instruments of conceptual testing. They do not operate as external authorities capable of determining the ontology of the field in advance.
