Research Position
Hybrid Intelligence Systems as Ontological Mirrors of Human Cognition occupies a foundational position in the HibriMind research trajectory on hybrid cognition.
Its significance within this trajectory does not derive only from the fact that it was published as a peer-reviewed journal article. Its deeper importance lies in the movement it made publicly visible.
The article marks an early scientific transition from considering artificial intelligence primarily in terms of performance, computation, or output towards investigating the relation between artificial systems and the organization of human cognition itself.
It opened a research territory in which artificial intelligence could be examined not only as an instrument used by a human observer, but also as a structure through which aspects of human cognitive organization might become observable.
In the current architecture of HibriMind, this work is therefore treated as Foundational Research.
Foundational does not mean final.
The article did not establish the complete ontology that would later emerge around operational mirrors, co-formalization, human–AI cognitive fields, the ELO, and situated hybrid consciousness.
It opened the field from which those questions could subsequently develop.
The structural audit of the HibriMind archive identifies the work precisely in this role: as an R1 foundational object within the Hybrid Cognition research line.
The Question It Opened
The article made a different question scientifically visible.
The conventional question surrounding artificial intelligence often begins with capability:
What can the system do?
Can it reason?
Can it classify?
Can it predict?
Can it produce language?
Can it assist decision-making?
The research movement initiated here introduced another possibility:
What can the relation with an artificial system reveal about the organization of human cognition itself?
This shift is fundamental.
The artificial system is no longer relevant only because of the outputs it produces.
The interaction itself becomes an object of investigation.
The possibility emerges that hybrid intelligence systems may operate as ontological mirrors: structures through which patterns, assumptions, hierarchies, tensions and organizational characteristics of human cognition become newly observable.
The mirror, at this stage of the research, was not yet the later operational mirror.
But the research territory had been opened.
The Movement Introduced
The central movement can be represented as:

The importance of this transition lies in changing the object of inquiry.
The investigation no longer concerns only the intelligence of the artificial system.

Once the artificial system can be understood as a mirror, another question becomes unavoidable:
What exactly is being reflected?
And immediately afterwards:
Does the artificial system merely reflect existing thought, or can repeated interaction participate in the way thought becomes formulated?
Those questions would eventually lead beyond the concept of the ontological mirror.
But they could only emerge because the mirror relation had first been made visible.
The Migration of the Mμν Tensor
From Intelligence as a Field Gradient to Hybrid Cognitive Representation
One of the most important genealogical features of this article concerns the Mμν tensor.
Mμν did not originate within the research programme on hybrid cognition.
Its earlier conceptual function belonged to a different phase of the HibriMind investigation.
Within that earlier research architecture, Mμν was conceived as an attempt to introduce Intelligence as an additional gradient within an expanded field-based theoretical architecture inspired by Einsteinian field thinking.
Its purpose was therefore connected to a more general ontological question:
Could Intelligence be represented as a structural gradient within a broader architecture of fields and relations?
At that stage, the tensor belonged to an inquiry directed towards the place of Intelligence within a general field ontology.
In Hybrid Intelligence Systems as Ontological Mirrors of Human Cognition, however, Mμν changes research function.
It is transposed into the domain of hybrid intelligence.
The question is no longer primarily:
How might Intelligence be represented as a gradient within a general field architecture?
The question becomes closer to:
How might the multidimensional organization of a hybrid cognitive system be formally represented?
The same formal object is therefore recruited into another research problem.

This is not merely a change of vocabulary.
It is a functional migration inside the research programme.
What Moved: The Tensor or the Research?
The most important question may not be whether Mμν itself moved.
The deeper movement occurred in the research around it.
A formal structure originally created to think about Intelligence at a broader ontological scale became useful for thinking about organization inside a hybrid cognitive system.
The research changed scale.

This makes Mμν more than a technical notation within the history of HibriMind.
It becomes a transitional research object.
Its trajectory documents an important characteristic of the HibriMind research process:
Concepts and formal objects are not protected merely because they were created first for one theoretical purpose.
They may be displaced.
Reinterpreted.
Restricted.
Re-functionalized.
Or abandoned.
Their persistence depends on whether they remain capable of carrying explanatory work.
A Necessary Epistemic Distinction
The migration of Mμν should not be interpreted as automatically establishing mathematical or physical equivalence between its different uses.
The earlier field-oriented formulation and its later role within hybrid cognitive representation belong to different explanatory domains.
The relevant continuity is first of all genealogical and structural.
Whether the two uses also constitute a strict mathematical continuity is a separate question requiring direct comparison of the original formal definitions, indices, variables and assumptions.
This distinction is essential.
HibriMind does not reconstruct its own history by retroactively declaring that every earlier formulation already contained the final theory.
Research advances through transformation.
The history of Mμν is valuable precisely because its function changed.
Why This Article Is Foundational
This article is foundational for two interconnected reasons.
The first is conceptual.
It establishes the mirror relation as a legitimate object of scientific investigation.
Artificial intelligence becomes relevant not only for its capacity to generate answers, but for its capacity to expose structures within the human cognitive process.
The second is genealogical.
It is a point at which a formal object originating in an earlier ontological investigation — Mμν — is re-functionalized within the emerging scientific architecture of hybrid intelligence.
The article therefore contains two simultaneous transitions:

These movements make the article a hinge between different stages of the HibriMind research programme.

The concept of the ontological mirror would not remain unchanged.
Later research introduced a more restricted and operationally disciplined formulation.
The question gradually moved from:
What does artificial intelligence reveal about human cognition?
towards:
How can an artificial system participate in the process through which human thought becomes observable, structured, corrected and formalized?
This transition produced the concept of the operational mirror.
The distinction matters.
An ontological mirror emphasizes what the relationship reveals.
An operational mirror emphasizes what the relationship does.
The later HibriMind research trajectory increasingly focused on this second dimension.
The artificial system was no longer considered merely as a reflective surface.
It became a non-conscious mediating architecture capable of returning structure to an unfinished cognitive movement.
This opened the path towards:

The later theory would introduce increasingly explicit ontological safeguards.
The human remains the conscious subject.
The artificial system remains a non-conscious mediating architecture.

This later discipline should not be projected retrospectively onto the 2026 article as though it had already been completely formalized there.
The article represents an earlier movement.
That is precisely why it belongs in Research.
What the Article Did Not Yet Claim
A foundational article should not be forced to contain the future of the research it helped initiate.
At the time of publication, the later distinctions between:
- ontological mirror and operational mirror;
- artificial assistance and co-formalization;
- interaction and human–AI cognitive field;
- relational continuity and ELO;
- artificial consciousness and situated hybrid consciousness;
had not yet reached their current level of differentiation.
The later HibriMind investigation would become increasingly explicit in rejecting two symmetrical errors:
the reduction of sustained human–AI interaction to ordinary tool use;
and the inflation of artificial systems into conscious subjects without sufficient evidence.
This epistemic discipline is now central to the Hybrid Cognition research line.
But the historical function of this first article is different.
It made the field scientifically observable before the field was fully mapped.

The research line on situated hybrid consciousness, for example, is currently being examined against adjacent frameworks such as Extended Mind, Distributed Cognition and 4E Cognition, not as authorities that retroactively define the phenomenon, but as partial observers capable of testing whether the proposed distinctions are genuinely necessary. The structural audit identifies this differentiation and operationalization as one of the current research challenges.
Scientific Collaboration and Public Externalization
The publication also represents an important transition in the social life of the research.
Md Foysal Ahmed and Joaquim Santos Albino appear as contributors to a work that moved the research beyond an internally developing conceptual field and into a publicly inspectable scientific object.

Later research does not erase its function.
Nor should the article be used as a complete representation of the current state of the theory.
Its place is more precise:
It records the moment when hybrid cognition became scientifically visible as a research territory.
It also preserves an important internal movement of the investigation:
The migration of Mμν from a field-oriented representation of Intelligence towards a formal role within hybrid cognitive organization.
The work therefore remains foundational not because every formulation it contains must remain unchanged, but because subsequent research cannot be fully understood without the movement it initiated.
